Guided walking tour “in the footsteps of Rembrandt” through historical Leiden.
This tour will start from the Fletcher Wellness-Hotel Leiden and ends in the city centre. Busses will bring you to the BBQ in Katwijk.
Rembrandt was a Dutch painter. He is generally considered a great visual artist and one of the most important painters in Dutch art history. In his days, he was already a well-known painter. His contributions to painting came in a period of great wealth and cultural achievement in the Golden age of Holland. Though he made many paintings he died in poor conditions. He was born in Leiden on 15 July 1606 and started his painting career in this town. He opened a studio in either 1624 or 1625. At the end of 1631, he moved to Amsterdam. Although his house has been demolished, you can still see the Latin school he used to go to and cross the bridge where he used to walk to visit the windmill of his father. A similar windmill has been constructed on site.

BBQ dinner beach pavilion ‘Het Strand’ – Katwijk aan Zee
Sunday June 19, 2022 – 19:00 – 22:00
A BBQ dinner on the beach of Katwijk. During the dinner you can enjoy the view on the North Sea. And be fascinated by the sea spectacle and the beautiful sunset.
In Roman times, Katwijk was a place of strategic importance. It was located at the Roman Empire's northern border (called Limes), at the mouth of the Rhine river. No doubt at that time people already ate fish. You can still watch the Rhine river flow into the sea, a magnificent sight. Around 1231, the first reference to Catwijck appeared in the records. A reference to a fish market on the beach appeared in the records around 150 years later. While there wasn't a harbor in earlier times, from which the fishing vessels could sail to see, people used flatboats. First a so called Visserspinck, and after 1830 a Bomschuit. In the year 1916 the fishing fleet reached a for the time being apex of 130 sailing vessels! Nowadays you will find the fishery fleet of Katwijk in the harbour of IJmuiden, but there is still a fishery school in Katwijk!
Fee: € 45,00* per person.
*Please note that all fees are excluding 21% VAT.
