Academy Building of the University

Monday June 20, 2022 - 16:00 hrs.

The official retirement lecture of conference president Martine Jager.

Reception Academy Building

Monday June 20, 2022 - 17:00 – 18:30

The reception will take place in the old Academy building of Leiden University.

The Academy Building is the oldest University building in Leiden, dating back to 1581. Today it is mainly used for ceremonies such as graduation, inaugural lectures, and promotions. The Sweat Room is a room in the Academy Building. It is a Leiden tradition for graduates to sign or write their name on the walls of this room following their graduation ceremony. Originally, this room was originally used as a meeting room for the curators. Later the room was used as a storage place for peat for the stoves of the university. It then served as a sort of second Senate chamber for conducting exams. It was not until the eighteenth century that the room became the guard room from which it now owes its name. It is not known who put his first signature on the walls of the room while waiting for the exam, nor is it known when that was. This first signature was the beginning of a long tradition, although the signature is now only put after graduation. Well-known Leiden alumni who have put their name in the room are the Queens Beatrix and Juliana, King Willem-Alexander, and Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema, the Soldier of Orange. In addition, the signatures of prominent figures such as Queen Wilhelmina, Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela can be read on the walls of the Sweat Room, because they have received a Leiden honorary doctorate.

Fee: € 15,00* per person.

Dinner Buffet Botanical Gardens

Monday June 20, 2022, 18:30 – 22:00

For the last evening, dinner will be served in the centuries-old botanical Gardens. The dinner buffet will take place in the beautiful 18th century ‘Oranjerie of the Botanical Gardens or in the garden itself, depending on the weather conditions.

The entrance of the Botanical Gardens is adjacent to the Academy building where the farewell reception takes place.

The Hortus Botanicus Leiden is the oldest botanical garden in The Netherlands. The oldest section of the Hortus, dating back to 1590, has been recreated as the current Front Garden. It has been renovated with new plants and in 2000, a new glasshouse was added to form the Winter Garden. The Clusius Garden gives an impression of what the Hortus was like around 1600, when the bonds between The Netherlands and Asia were formed. Many Asian plants were introduced to Europe through this garden, and the Japanese Garden bears witness to the exchange of plants and knowledge between these cultures. The Hortus’ pride, Victoria amazonica, can be admired in the Victoria Glasshouse. It is a place of pure relaxation and beauty, where you can socialize with your friends during one of the shortest nights of the year.

Fee € 120,00* per person, includes a three-course dinner buffet and drinks and entrance to the Botanical Gardens. The number of participants is limited (120).

*Please note that all fees are excluding 21% VAT.
